The Festa dei Ceri, which takes place in Gubbio on 15 May of every year, is one of the most ancient and fascinating folkloristic events in Italy.
This celebration, which dates back to the 12th century, consists of the carriage in a race of three candles crowned with statues of saints: Saint Ubaldo, patron of Gubbio, Saint George and Saint Anthony Abbot.
Unlike a historical reenactment, the Festa dei Ceri is a living event that continues to take place annually, embodying an uninterrupted tradition for centuries.

The festival has a fundamental role for the community of Gubbio, both from a social and cultural point of view. The whole citizenry participates with a deep attachment, manifesting strong passions and feelings that reflect the values and contradictions of this ancient tradition: the importance of the event is such that, since 1973, the three Ceri represent the symbol of the Umbria Region, stylized in the banner and the official flag.
